The lower rating on ease of install is due to the 4 slotted holes on the back side of the lights.

Without a template this is very frustrating to get the 4 screws squared and at the right measurements. I ended up drilling two holes on each side of the light between the bulbs and used screws and fender washers to mount to the bottom side of the bottom truss chord. Do not torque the screws down, just lightly snug them up to keep from bending the frame of the light.

The fourth row will have to wait until I get my garage modifications done. These 3 rows of leds are way brighter than the 3 rows of fluorescent lights that I took down. The new leds uses less room, less power, and no humming sound. I would not hesitate to buy these again. First, let me say that I think these lights are of great quality at this price point. If you want a lot of lumens per dollar, then look no further.

That said, my particular application was not "plug-and-play" since I wanted flush mount, and these lights are designed primarily for chain mount. Yes, there are four holes two on each end that are nominally for flush mounting, but aligning four holes per light, and then aligning the lights to each other, would have proved difficult if I didn't install them the way I did.

For all that follows, reference my attached photos. I bought these Sunco shop lights to go in two 2-car garages each garage about sq. There is now so much light, that we turned off three of them at the pull chain switch, and only turn them on if needed. In my garage I need brighter lighting for more detailed work car, woodworking, etc. Thus, I put six in my wife's garage, and ten in mine. Similarly, I only have 4 fixtures turned on for general lighting and only turn on the others as needed.

The installation was the same for each garage, except that I plugged in her lights, and I hardwired mine. In her garage, they replaced two 4-ft, 2-bulb F54T5 fluorescent fixtures. These were notoriously slow to come on in cold weather, whereas the LEDs come on instantly. In mine, I replaced screw-in LED lights that only provided lumens each whereas the Sunco lights are lumens. For installation, I chose to drill two holes in between the LEDs to accommodate 8 screws instead of using the provided chain or the existing mounting holes.

The lights are very light, and are easily mounted this way. I located the holes 9 inches from each end, thus 30 inches appart. I used a template specifically, an aluminum door threshhold to mark my holes. The cabinet screws have a wide, flat head, so no washer is needed. These work best for attaching at a stud location. If attaching in drywall, the drywall anchors work well, but I used a 8 fender washer with the anchor screw.

These anchors are rated for 50 pounds, but that's only sheer strength. Tensile strength is much less, but since the lights weigh so little, there's no risk they'll fall. The only real difference in the installation for my two garages is how they lights are powered. In my wife's garage, I plugged them in.

Four are plugged in directly to the ceiling outlet and the other two are daisy-chained using the outlet on the other end of the light. Easy, but the 5-foot cord is a bit unsightly hanging up there. I may later shorten the cords and use a new plug. I can't shorten the other end connected to the light itself since it is soldered into the circuit board I opened up one of the lights to check.

I guess I could shorten and resolder, but seems a lot of trouble for aesthetics. In my garage, I already had 10 ceiling boxes placed where I wanted the lights to go. This was part of the pre-planning I did when I built the garage. I would have liked to cover those boxes with the lights, but the design of the lights is plug-in only, so I shifted the location by a few inches. As you can see, it's a pretty clean look nevertheless. Other light fixtures I found that provided for my preferred installation method were substantially more expensive, so I went with the Sunco lights in the interest of cost savings over aesthetics.

When you cut the cord, which is only 2-conductor, you see the molded outer insulation see picture is not like romex. Thus, you have to be extremely careful when stripping the outer insulation so as not to cut the conductor insulation and expose the copper. I used a new, sharp razor blade, scored the outside, then "bent" the cord to stress the outer insulation at the score, then carefully scored it again until the inner conductors were visible.

After that, the outer insulation just slid off. One thing I'll mention, if you have a laser level with a vertical line, that will substantially help with aligning the lights. If you're consistent with hole placement in the light fixture as described above , then the laser will help align the hole locations on the ceiling without having to measure prone to errors or snap a chalk line difficult to remove or paint over.
